Thursday, January 26

Yesterday in class students filled out the study guide for the upcoming end of unit test on Egypt and Kush. We spent today reviewing via Egypt and Kush Jeopardy. The test is next Wednesday. All students should have a study guide by now–thanks to Talya for filling one out for an absent Alex. Just in case, find a copy below.

Tomorrow there will be two quizzes in class-the spelling test for Lesson 10 and the first preposition quiz. Study hard, study well.

Monday, January 23

No homework tonight, though students have plenty to work on. Egypt journals, as stated earlier, are due on Wednesday. Today in class, students read the first part of their short story to their peers to get their feedback. The rough draft for the short stories will be due on Monday, January 30. Short stories must be no more than 2,000 words, and must be delivered to me electronically via email or a memory stick.

Although there is no Wordly Wise homework tonight, there will be a spelling test on Friday for the words of Lesson 10. Click below for the list.

In addition to the spelling test, there will be the first of four preposition quizzes on Friday. Prepositions are tricky, so I will ask that students memorize the 48 most common over the next four weeks. The first list can be found below. All students will have to do is write the 12 words down for Friday from memory.

Tuesday, December 5

As you may know by now, the class is preparing a Hanukkah play based on the well known Eric Kimmel story book, Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. By Friday, students should know their parts well enough to run the play through without being glued to their scripts. If all goes well, we will perform it next week for our Bridge-K buddies, the kindergartners and perhaps 1st graders. Parents of course are also welcome. We will most likely perform it next Monday and Tuesday afternoon between the hours of 1:45-2:45.

Tomorrow is the Unit 2 History Test on Sumer and the Near East. Students should have received the study guide last week. We went over the study guide on Friday and reviewed it today in class, so hopefully everybody will be ready for tomorrow.

A reminder that Near East pamphlets and 3-D projects are due a week from tomorrow.

Happy December everyone. A lot of stuff going on as we enter a new month.

Here is the link for Wordly Wise Lesson 7. Sorry, I usually put it in with the homework.

Wordly Wise Lesson 7 Word List and Activities

Book  Share Projects: By now, students should be reading their book for their next book share project. This is not the same as their book for the Literature Discussion Circles, which is a different project. The book share projects are to be presented on Friday, December 16. Just as last time, students must come up with a  creative way of sharing the book they are reading with the rest of the class. Through the project, they must give a clear enough idea of what the book is about that another person could make a decision upon hearing it whether this was a book they would be interested in or not.

As mentioned in previous newsletters, they must choose one of the ancient near eastern civilizations we have been studying in class and put together a 1) colorful pamphlet containing specific information about their civilization and 2) a 3-D project that represents some aspect of their civilization. Below find a link to the assignment sheet and some web sites to help do research at home as needed. The completed project is due on Wednesday, December 14.
